James Smith's lecture looked at the life of Sir George Everest, his professional career in India as Superintendent of the Great Trigonometrical Survey and as Surveyor General of India and his marriage after retirement and his family. He also looked at his discovery, using survey techniques, of the world's highest mountain and the subsequent heighting and naming of this famous peak.
