50 years on Everest
Lecture by: Jamling Norgay
Location: Sports House
2003-01-21

In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay of the British Mount Everest Expedition became the first men to reach the summit of Mount Everest. In December, as an early celebration of the 50th Anniversary of this achievement, we are delighted to welcome to Hong Kong Tenzing Norgay's son, Jamling Tenzing Norgay for a lecture, Mt. Everest: 50 Years.

Jamling Tenzing Norgay was born in Darjeeling, India, and by age six had already begun to show a penchant for climbing.

In this lecture, Mr. Norgay will tell the stories of his 1996 and 2002 Mt. Everest climbs, drawing parallels with his father? legendary ascent, illustrated by slides taken all the way from 1953 to 2002. Mr. Norgay will interweave the story of his own dramatic climb with little known stories from his father? own historic ascent, allowing us to see what has changed in the fifty years since this mountain was first climbed. Mr. Norgay will also speak of Himalayan culture and the environment problems of mountain tourism.
