Geology in the Nine Pin Islands
Lecture by: Geological field trip led by Chris Fletcher
Location: -
1999-05-15

Chris Fletcher, head of the Geological Survey in Hong Kong, led a fascinating trip to the Ninepin Islands, described as probably the most spectacular development of columnar jointing in ash flow tuffs in the world. The tuffs were erupted along with 70 cubic kilometres of ash during one catastrophic event (by comparison to 3 cubic kilometres for the Mount St Helen's eruption and 12 cubic kilometres for Krakatau).
