John Julius Norwich
Wednesday, 5 Dec 2001
The acclaimed historian, author and broadcaster spoke on Venice, a subject on which he is well recognised as an expert. He looked at the astonishing growth of Venice, from her humble origins as a place of refuge from barbarian invasions to an independent republic which lasted more than a thousand years. Mistress over much of the Mediterranean, with a trading Empire extending to China, Lord Norwich believes she remains the most beautiful city the world has ever seen.
