A dinner has been arranged by the British Chamber of Commerce and a number of tables have been kindly allocated to the RGSHK. Dress Code: Black Tie Dame Ellen achieved the Royal Yacht Association Yachtmaster and Instructor's ticket, aged 18, in 1994 and in 1995 the BT/YJA Young Sailor of Year award and sailed 'Iduna' singlehanded around Great Britain. In 1996, Dame Ellen made her first transatlantic passage leaving Newport, Rhode Island. In 1998, Dame Ellen won a solo transatlantic race from St Malo to Guadeloupe in just 20 days and the following year won the round Europe race on board Open 60ft 'Aquitaine Innovations'. In 2000, she won the Europe1 New Man solo transatlantic race on board 'Kingfisher', the youngest person to ever win race and the following year became the fastest female and youngest sailor to race around the world solo, nonstop. Numerous other records have followed, including her famous solo round the world record in 2004, setting a new record of 71 days, 15hrs, 18mins and 33secs. Dame Ellen holds numerous awards including the Raymarine YJA Yachtsman of the Year Award, ISAF World Champion election of Woman Sailor of the Year by 113 sailing Federations throughout the world, FICO World Champion ranked by number of points obtained in the year's ocean races awarded, BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, listed in Time magazine 100 Heroes & Icons 2005, the DBE and the Raymarine YJA Yachtsman of the Year Award 2005. During her career, Dame Ellen is estimated to have sailed over 250,000 miles, close to 11 times around the world.
