After leaving Central by coach, we take a private speedboat from Sai Kung.  This passes through the Double Haven Marine Park and around picturesque islands, with a thrilling high-speed glimpse of the geopark.  

Once at Lai Chi Wo, one of the best-conserved walled Hakka villages in Hong Kong, our guide provides the history and culture of the Hakka people dating back over 400 years.  As the name suggests, this area was once known for its lychee trees before farmers moving on to grow more profitable mandarins.  It was once a prosperous village with around 500-600 residents before its decline in the last century.  Only a few families remain, and there is the opportunity to buy home grown fruits & vegetables and locally made produce.

In addition, there is the chance to explore Ngau Shi Wu, rumored to be a haunted village which led to it becoming abandoned.

In recent years, many villagers and volunteers have worked to revitalise Lai Chi Wo.  Various projects have included re-cultivation of the fields, art festivals and homestays.  Through these we learn about the challenges faced in keeping these once prosperous villages alive.

This is a small group and a traditional Hakka lunch is served in the home of a villager.

Stanley Shea is a freelance tour guide with over 7 years’ experience in the field. He has organised many trips for the RGS-HK and various organisations including the American Women’s Association HK.  He also has extensive experience coordinating trips in Mainland China, Taiwan and Japan.

Leave City Hall, Central by coach at 9:00am
Speedboat from Wong Shek Pier in Sai Kung at 10:20am
Return to Central by 6:30pm (approximately)

Cost: $1,380 for Members & $1,480 for Members' guests, including return coach, two-way speed boat and lunch.
