Rescuing Asia’s Bears

Dr Jill Robinson MBE
Wednesday, 30 Sep 2026
Complimentary drinks at 6:45 pm; Talk at 7:30 pm
Capital Group, 27/F, One International Finance Centre, Central

It has been 19 years since legendary animal campaigner Jill Robinson last spoke at a RGS event. Back then, bear bile farming was firmly embedded in Vietnam. Today, after decades of advocacy, rescue and working alongside governments and communities, bear bile farming in Vietnam is on its last legs and she is working towards ending it for good this year.

In this talk, Jill shares the extraordinary journey from those early days to this pivotal moment.  This includes her work as Founder and CEO of Animals Asia Foundation, helping to protect the over 10,000 moon bears that were kept in agony on bile farms in China and Vietnam, improve animal welfare and advance conservation across Vietnam and China.

This is a particularly important moment to hear Jill’s story.  She shows how she is now in the final chapter of her work to bring the remaining bears in Vietnam to safety, and the opportunity to end bear bile farming for good is closer than ever.  She discusses how tireless dedication and a unique approach of working alongside local communities and with all levels of government, have seen unprecedented success in both countries with wide relevance for other animal welfare campaigns.

Jill Robinson is from the United Kingdom and studied in Middlesex, before entering a career in television production.  After ten years of working at the BBC and Thames Television,  Jill moved to Hong Kong in 1985, where she met the then Asia Coordinator of the International Fund for Animal Welfare.  During the next 11 years, Jill followed a career in animal welfare as the Asia Representative for IFAW, before founding the Animals Asia Foundation.  Jill has been a member of the Hong Kong government “Animal Welfare Advisory Group” and is an Honorary Adviser to the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation.  Jill was also a member of the SPCA Executive Committee for eight years.  She was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, in recognition of her services to animal welfare in Asia.
